For our baby number 2 we searched and tested car seats that will be comfortable and convenient for our on-the-go lifestyle. Lucky for us, we found the easy to install Chicco Keyfit 30. It runs for about $199 that includes the base and a removable head and body insert. It can fit newborns as small as 4 pounds all the way to kids as much as 30 pounds and 30 inches tall.

How We Picked and Tested Chicco KeyFit 30

We tested Chicco KeyFit 30 by installing it in the backseat of our sedan according to its instructions. We included the installation, safety features, comfort/quality and weight.

We also went through every 5-start and 1-star Amazon reviews to get a sense of how other parent experienced KeyFit 30.

Ease of installation

Installing car seats can be pretty confusing and overwhelming. But Chicco decided to give parents a break by providing very user-friendly featured. Installing KeyFit 30 using the LATCH system is probably the easiest installation we’ve experienced. It has spring assisted leveling system which will give you that perfect angle for the base. Bubble-leveling indicators on both sides which will tell you if the base is at the correct angle. A super cinch latch tightener which is found in the middle of the base. Tightening your base on both sides by pulling this strap is a game changer. It’s a good thing that Chicco KeyFit 30 is easy to install using the LATCH because installing it using your car’s belt is confusing and overwhelming. We are the most comfortable installing the Chicco using the LATCH system.

Installing the car seat without the base proves to be challenging and confusing. We do not recommend Chicco for parents who use public transportation on a daily basis. We also had to use few towels before we got the correct angle and secure it tight enough. And even then, the seat felt unstable and uncomfortable. This is not something we want to use with our baby.

Safety features

The Chicco KeyFit 30 is an all-around car seat that is easy to clean, install and use. It has SuperCinch LATCH system, RideRight bubble level indicator on both sides, and ReclineSure which ensures proper installation in the easiest way. All safety features work well, making it a reliable car seat under $200.

Comfort/Quality

While the KeyFit 30 has thick padding all around, the fabric itself is coarse, and we find it hard for a baby’s delicate skin. The head and body inserts are somewhat softer and nicer. However, we still put a soft blanket over it to avoid irritating our baby’s skin.

The fit and finish of the KeyFit30 is below average as compared to other car seat. It does look sleek, but it’s bulky and takes too much space specially if you’re using a small car.

Weight

We find KeyFit 30 lighter than other brands we tested, weighing less than 10 lbs., it makes carrying and transferring easy. Though keep in mind that your baby’s weight will still add to it.

For some, weight does not hold a big impact in choosing the car seat, like ease of installation, security and comfort. But, if you are a person who lives on the go, this is considered important.

Chicco KeyFit 30 Infant Car Seat

While Chicco KeyFit 30 works exceptionally well, it’s not for parents who are looking to for something their infant can transition into until they grow bigger. This car seat has a maximum weight capacity of 30 lbs, and maximum height of 30 inches.

Depending on how big your infant or how fast they grow, you may not get as many years with KeyFit 30 compared to other brands.
